On this day, 28 January 1978 … a brand new and, I believe, highly-regarded new story began in Jinty. Pat Mills’ Concrete Surfer told the story of Jean, a British girl who had emigrated with her family to Australia but when that didn’t work out returned alone to live with her ‘perfect’ cousin Carol and family. Carol appears to be beautiful, talented and popular but Jean has skateboard smarts with which to make her mark.
Elsewhere in this issue, Come Into My Parlour tells of a girl possessed by an old crone who wants her to kill her best friend, Two Mothers for Maggie followed the struggles of a young actress finding her loyalties split between her real mum and her screen mum, Darling Clementine was the story of Ella’s quest to prove that she wasn’t responsible for an accident that put her cousin Clem into a coma, and another Pat Mills serial, Land of No Tears, saw a twentieth-century girl transported into a future in which disability was considered a crime. Not too far into the future, then.
