On this day, 18 May 1974 … It’s the Big Game tonight for one of North-west England’s biggest clubs! Accrington Stanley v AFC Wimbledon in the League Two Play-off Semi-final Second Leg – can’t wait. Accrington have got one of those lovely, evocative British team names that Scorcher, Score ‘n’ Roar, Tiger and Roy of the Rovers would riff upon so splendidly. In this issue of Scorcher and Score we find Nipper Lawrence playing through the pain barrier for docks-town club Blackport Rovers, Jack and Jimmy Chelsey planning their summer activities away from ‘famous First Division club’ Castleburn City, Hot-shot Hamish and his daddy breaking out from a Hebridean prison cell (having been imprisoned for throwing an oil company’s bulldozer off a bridge) so that he can play in the cup final for Princes Park, ‘a small club in the Scottish Second Division’, The Boy in the Velvet Mask trying to keep his true identity hidden while keeping goal for Third Division side Lynchester United, Ken Reid’s Jimmy Jinks torturing the management of his team Slopville Wanderers , and Bobby of the Blues leading the fightback for top-flight Everpool City – clearly based on … oh, I don’t know, some small town near Accrington.
