One of two new strips to begin in this week's (39 years ago) issue of Whoopee! was the remarkable Dick Doobie The Back to Front Man, created by Steve Bell, who has since become one of the world's greatest subversive political cartoonists. His outstanding If ... has run in the Guardian since 1981, and you can browse much more of his work on his Belltoons website.

The other new story to begin in this issue of Whoopee! was Book Worm, a rather more traditional strip than Doobie although much longer-lasting (it survived Whoopee!'s merge into Whizzer and Chips eight years later), and initially drawn by another of my all-time favourite artists, Sid Burgon.
