The summer transfer window is officially open, so today is a good day to look back on possibly the most contentious and unexpected signing in (ahem, comics) football history - the move of Roy Race from Melchester Rovers to Walford Rovers. Roy didn't play in Walford blue for long, and was back at Mel Park within a year, but it was one of the most shocking moments for me as a young reader.

Writer Tom Tully and Roy of the Rovers' editor Barrie Tomlinson were responsible for the constantly surprising and twisty-turny scripting of Roy's career, and I adored the artwork of David Sque, who drew the strip during the years that I read it. David and Barrie will both be making rare appearances as guests at the forthcoming Lancaster Comics Day on 11 June - well worth a visit, I would say.
